Temp worker suffers serious hand injury due to lack of machine guarding

August 3, 2015

A 30-year-old temporary employee required extensive surgery after suffering burns and lacerations of tendons and ligaments in her right hand after she used a cutting and sealing machine at a frozen bread manufacturer that supplies products to Costco Wholesale Corp., IGA, Piggly Wiggly and others.

Ashley Furniture didn’t report amputation

One of 1,000+ injuries in 3 1/2 years at one worksite
August 2, 2015

A 56-year-old employee of furniture manufacturer Ashley Furniture Industries Inc. had his right ring finger amputated because the company has continued to ignore safety requirements to protect workers from moving machine parts. The company also failed to report the injury to OSHA, as required.

Press crushes worker’s hand at seal manufacturer

Lauren Manufacturing ignored machine safety hazards, faces $105K in fines
July 17, 2015

A hydraulic press crushed a 62-year-old machine operator's left hand at a seal and gasket manufacturer, resulting in multiple broken bones. The injured worker, a 15-year employee, has been unable to return to work and has endured three surgeries as a result.

Worker fired after reporting hazards to OSHA

July 13, 2015

A John Deere & Co. pipefitter who was fired after reporting several safety violations to OSHA would be reinstated with back pay, under the terms of a lawsuit filed by the agency. On three separate occasions, the worker filed complaints about the company’s Moline, Illinois facility with OSHA, each time resulting in violations against the company.
