Agency releases preliminary fatality data for 2014

Preliminary data released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration indicates that 40 miners died in work-related accidents at the nation’s mines in 2014, two fewer than in the previous year.
The owner of a construction company was killed and a police officer injured yesterday in a trench collapse in suburban Detroit. News sources say 59-year-old Leland Rumph, owner of Rumph Construction, was digging a trench into a sewer in Grosse Pointe Woods when the trench collapsed, burying him up to his neck in heavy clay in the 20 foot deep hole dug by a backhoe.
Despite outreach efforts by the Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), a high number of preventable mining industry deaths occurred during the first half of 2014, according to a mid-year summary.
