Gaps in oil & gas extraction work fatalities and severe injury statistics

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s NIOSH, between January, 2015 to February, 2017 oil and gas extraction workers were involved in 602 incidents, some resulting in multiple injuries. There were 481 hospitalizations and 166 amputations.

OSHA has cited a Nebraska egg processing facility for multiple safety violations after an employee suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a dock leveler - a device used to allow a forklift to travel between a loading dock and a trailer.

Bridge co. employee killed in Fla. bridge collapse

March 19, 2018
A bridge worker is among the six known fatalities of Thursday’s collapse of a pedestrian bridge in Florida. Navaro Brown, an employee of Structural Technologies VSL, has been identified as one of the people killed when a newly installed bridge intended to provide safe passage for students of Florida International University collapsed onto a busy highway, crushing a number of cars.

Fall kills Cirque du Soleil performer

A French aerialist plunged to his death Saturday night in Tampa, Florida, while performing an aerial straps routine in the famed Cirque du Soleil theatrical company’s “Volta” show. News reports say Yann Arnaud was performing on the double rings when one of his hands slipped and he fell about 20 feet to the stage in front of horrified spectators.

As many Americans continue to worry that the Supreme Court ruling on unions could change workplace safety laws for the worse, there remains a more general threat to workplace safety which U.S. businesses should be focused on. Despite a gradual decrease over the past 13 years, the workplace fatality rate per 100,000 people in the U.S. is still significantly higher than in most E.U. countries.

Drilling contractor in Quinton explosion had OSHA violations in past

March 8, 2018
OSHA has launched an investigation into what caused a drilling rig explosion this past January that left five dead in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma. An Oklahoma Corporation Commission investigation report said authorities learned at 8:45 a.m. Monday, January 22, that the well was on fire from an uncontrolled gas release. The report recommended that the operator should kill the well with heavy drilling mud, make sure it is stabilized with mud and cement plugs, and take soil samples by Feb. 23.

Oil worker killed on Talos Energy platform in U.S. Gulf of Mexico

March 7, 2018
An oil and gas worker on a Talos Energy LLC platform in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico was killed on Saturday, February 17 while replacing piping, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) reproted. The worker was injured while removing out-of-service fire suppression equipment and later died as a result of the injuries. No other personnel were injured and there was no fire or release as a result of the accident, Talos said in a statement.

OSHA makes reducing trenching deaths a top priority

An alarming leap in excavation and trench-related fatalities has made reducing them an Agency Priority Goal for OSHA for 2018. The agency plans to accomplish this by increasing awareness of trenching hazards in construction, educating employers and workers on safe cave-in prevention solutions, and decreasing the number of trench collapses.

Weekly Toll: Another group of workers join the list those who didn’t make it through the workday

Three school employees were among the 17 persons killed in the mass shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Scott Beigel, 35, a geography teacher, was killed as he tried to usher students back into his classroom when the shooting broke out. Aaron Feis, 37, an assistant football coach, was killed when he threw himself in front of students to protect them from oncoming bullets, according to football program spokeswoman Denis Lehtio.

Patio installer dies in fall

February 28, 2018
A Florida Patio and Pool Enclosure Installer faces $40,096 in fines following the death of an employee who fell while installing patio screen enclosures. OSHA has cited Naples-based L.I. Aluminum Design Inc. for four serious citations.
