EPA issues final rule for safe aircraft drinking water (10/6)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced in a press release that it is issuing a final rule to ensure that safe and reliable drinking water is provided to aircraft passengers and crew. The rule provides multiple-barrier protection through requirements for coliform sampling, best management practices, corrective action, public notification, monitoring and operator training. It will better protect the public from illnesses caused by microbiological contamination.

Report examines potential hospital bed shortage and other H1N1 concerns (10/6)

Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) released a new report on October 1 that finds 15 states could run out of available hospital beds during the peak of the outbreak, if 35 percent of Americans were to get sick from the H1N1 flu virus, according to a TFAH press release. Twelve additional states could reach or exceed 75 percent of their hospital bed capacity, based on estimates from the FluSurge model developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

OSHA has cited S.D. Warren Co. for 19 alleged violations of workplace safety standards at the company's Somerset Mill in Skowhegan, Maine. The paper manufacturer faces proposed fines totaling $136,000.

New EPA rule to require best technologies to reduce greenhouse gases from large facilities (10/2)

EPA is taking a significant step to address greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under the Clean Air Act. A proposal will require large industrial facilities that emit at least 25,000 tons of GHGs a year to obtain construction and operating permits covering these emissions. These permits must demonstrate the use of best available control technologies and energy efficiency measures to minimize GHG emissions when facilities are constructed or significantly modified.
