EPA proposes exemptions to oil spill prevention requirements (1/13)

EPA is proposing to exempt from Oil Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure requirements milk containers and associated piping and appurtenances. The containers, piping, and appurtenances must be constructed according to current applicable 3-A Sanitary Standards, and are subject to the current applicable Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO) or a state dairy regulatory requirement equivalent to the current applicable PMO. The capacity of these milk containers would not be included in a facility’s total oil storage capacity calculation.

Three sulfuric acid manufacturers reach settlement with feds; to spend $12 million on pollution controls, pay $700,000 civil penalty (1/13)

Three manufacturers of sulfuric acid have agreed to spend at least $12 million on air pollution controls that are expected to eliminate more than 3,000 tons of harmful emissions annually from six production plants in Louisiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Justice Department announced today. Chemtrade Logistics, Chemtrade Refinery Services, and Marsulex also will pay a civil penalty of $700,000 under the Clean Air Act settlement.

EPA issues final rule for determining New Source Review permitting (1/13)

EPA has issued a final rule under the New Source Review (NSR) program that revises the agency’s policy on “aggregation.” For the purpose of determining whether NSR applies, a facility should group together, or aggregate, emissions from multiple related changes into one single project, only if those activities are substantially related.

Fire officials urge residents to install & test smoke alarms (1/12)

January 12, 2009
Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers, Baltimore Fire Chief James Clack, Washington, D.C. Fire Chief Dennis Rubin, and other fire organization leaders recently joined U.S. Fire Administrator Greg Cade to ask all residents of this nation to install, maintain, and test their smoke alarms, according to a press release from the U.S. Fire Administration. This national effort is a result of one of the deadliest holiday seasons in recent memory and several significant fires in the first days of 2009. Since Thanksgiving 2008, there have been more than 158 fatal fires in the United States resulting in over 200 fire fatalities.

Labor Secretary nominee outlines four priorities in Senate hearing (1/12)

New children's product safety laws take effect in February (1/12)

In February 2009, new requirements of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) take effect, according to a recent press release from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Manufacturers, importers and retailers are expected to comply with the new Congressionally-mandated laws.
