Safety would take a back seat if Senate passes bill on driverless cars, critics say

Consumer advocates are attacking a bill heading for a vote soon in the U.S. Senate that would clear legal obstacles for the deployment of driverless cars — a proposal that, critics say, lacks safeguards needed to protect the public and largely would let vehicle manufacturers regulate themselves. The measure, which is being pushed by auto and tech industry lobbyists, is called the AV START Act, standing for “American Vision for Safer Transportation through Advancement of Revolutionary Technologies.”

Utility worker killed in vehicle crash near California wildfire

September 12, 2018
Lineman Jairus Ayeta died while working near the Carr Fire, a large wildfire that burned 229,651 acres in northern California before being contained on August 30, 2018. Ayeta was 21 years old and from Uganda. He worked as an apprentice lineman and was part of a PG&E crew working in dangerous terrain to restore power when he was involved in a vehicle-related accident.

Flight crew survives, cargo jet doesn’t when landing gear collapses

August 29, 2018
The landing gear collapse on a FedEx MD-10-10F, wide-body cargo jet was caused by corrosion that led to fatigue cracking, according to an NTSB report released Thursday. Shortly after the FedEx MD-10-10F touched down at the Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport Oct. 28, 2016, the flight crew reported hearing a “bang” as the brakes were applied.
