Policymakers have eagerly promoted walking and bicycle riding as a way to get healthy exercise while reducing traffic congestion, air pollution and carbon emissions. But those activities are becoming increasingly dangerous in America. More than 6,200 pedestrians were killed by traffic collisions in 2018, the last year for which federal statistics are available, continuing the rising trend of recent years.

NTSB: Fatal S.C. bus crash shows importance of passenger restraints

February 4, 2020
A December 2019 crash involving an SUV and a 14-passenger coach bus in South Carolina resulted in fatalities, but it could have been worse, according to a preliminary report released last week by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The 2015 Chevrolet Equinox sport utility vehicle's airbag control mode indicates that the driver, a 53-year-old woman, was not wearing a seat belt. She was ejected from her vehicle and fatally injured during the crash sequence.

Terrain awareness technology that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been pushing for since 2006 may have helped prevent the helicopter crash that killed nine people on Sunday – including NBA legend Kobe Bryant – but the FAA refused to make it mandatory.

Safety harness was culprit in deadly helicopter crash

January 27, 2020
A harness intended to keep helicopter passengers safely in place was the cause of the aircraft losing power and ending up in New York City’s East River, in which all five passengers drowned. The pilot sustained minor injuries. That’s the conclusion of the NTSB's investigation into the March 11, 2018 incident involving a doors-off sightseeing helicopter.

With the increasing popularity of vaping, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is working with other federal agencies and organizations to remind airline passengers that electronic smoking devices like vaporizers (vapes) and e-cigarettes are considered hazardous materials when transported on aircraft. Electronic smoking devices contain lithium batteries that pose a fire risk.

An Oregon construction company is reeling from its first workplace death since its founding in 1939 – and the victim’s family is reeling from the man’s loss. News sources say Stephen Smith, a truck driver employed by Hamilton Construction Company, was killed in an incident Saturday at the Beltline/Delta Highway interchange.

Finding helicopter that crashed on Hawaii mountain took multiple agencies

January 21, 2020
A hiker was about a mile and a half up the Nualolo Trail in the Koke State Park in Hawaii, struggling with rain and fog and hampered by a visibility of about 20 feet, when he heard what sounded like the high-pitched whine of a helicopter in distress. Knowing that something was wrong, he tried to find the helicopter but couldn’t due to the adverse weather conditions and fading daylight.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has a plan for reducing the leading cause of work-related deaths in the U.S. – and it wants your input. The NIOSH Center for Motor Vehicle Safety Strategic Plan, 2020-2029 is intended to address risks faced by millions of workers who drive or ride in a motor vehicle as part of their jobs.

After NTSB-Tesla part ways, agency looks into fatal crash

January 16, 2020
After getting ejected from the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) investigation into the crash of one of its vehicles, Tesla – along with everyone else – will learn the probable cause of the incident when the agency discloses it in a meeting next month. On March 23, 2018, a 2017 Tesla Model X electric-powered passenger vehicle, crashed while traveling southbound on US Highway 101 in Mountain View, California.
