Planning underway for ASSE's 100th anniversary celebration (3/25)

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) announced plans to mark 100th anniversary with a celebration in 2011. The organization was founded in 1911 in the aftermath of the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that took 146 lives in New York City, ASSE says.

40 grants aim to advance top enviro priorities (3/25)

EPA is awarding approximately $800,000 in grants to organizations working with communities facing environmental justice challenges throughout the country, according to an agency press release. Forty grants, up to $20,000 each, are going to community-based organizations and local and tribal governments in 28 states for community projects aimed at addressing environmental and public health issues.

White House nominates M. Patricia Smith to be Department of Labor Solicitor

M. Patricia Smith is currently the Commissioner of the New York State Department of Labor and co-chair of New York State’s Economic Security sub-cabinet. She oversees the New York State Department of Labor with an annual budget of $4 billion, with 3,700 employees in 80 offices throughout the state and serves as advisor to Governor David Paterson on workforce and labor policy.

The Alcon Research, Ltd. facility in Huntington, W.Va., has joined the growing ranks of companies enrolling in EPA’s National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP).
