ASSE members speak out against workplace use of medical marijuana (3/19)

Texas worksite cited by OSHA for repeat trenching violations (3/18)

"Employees should not be exposed to the dangers of excavation hazards," said Eric S. Harbin, OSHA's area director in Austin, in a press statement announcing that OSHA has cited Austin-based Key Enterprises Inc. with four serious and two repeat violations of safety standards at the company's worksite in Dripping Springs, Texas.

President Obama appoints FDA commissioner and creates food safety group (3/17)

President Obama, in his weekly address, named Dr. Margaret Hamburg as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Dr. Joshua Sharfstein as the Principal Deputy Commissioner. President Obama also announced the creation of a new Food Safety Working Group to be chaired by the Secretaries of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture. This group will examine and upgrade food safety laws and enforce laws designed to keep the American people safe.

Report: improper rigging operations caused fatal New York crane collapse (3/17)

March 17, 2009
Last week, Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri released the findings of the year-long investigation into the tower crane collapse that occurred on March 15, 2008, at 303 East 51st St. in Manhattan, according to a press release. The investigation concluded that improper rigging operations caused an 11,000-pound steel collar to fall while it was being connected to the building under construction.

NFPA grant to support training for fire safety outreach program (3/17)

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has named Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service of Maryland as the winner of the 2009 Rolf H. Jensen Memorial Public Education Grant, according to an NFPA press release. The $5,000 award will support the fire and rescue service’s training program to provide outreach on fire safety for adults over the age of 65.
