AIHA urges Congress to study if NIOSH should move from CDC to National Institutes for Health (2/6)

On February 2, 2009, the American Industrial Hygiene Association sent a letter to Sen. Ted Kennedy, chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, requesting his support for a Government Accountability Office (GAO) study on whether or not the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) should remain within the organizational structure of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

"Smart Growth": EPA expands Building Health Communities for older residents awards program (2/6)

EPA has added a new category for neighborhood and non-governmental governmental organizations as part of its award program for excellence in Building Healthy Communities for Active Aging. The award program will continue to recognize public-sector entities, including all levels of elected governments, from city councils to state legislatures, and their constituent parts such as planning departments and other executive branch divisions.

Senators Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Mike Enzi (R-WYO) announced yesterday that the scheduled Thursday vote by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions to confirm the nomination of Hilda Solis as Labor Secretary would be postponed and rescheduled for a later, as yet unannounced, date.

NYC buildings department launches worker safety campaign (2/5)

February 5, 2009
Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri joined Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Guillermo Linares, representatives from the City’s leading construction firms, industry unions and worker advocacy groups Tuesday to announce the launch of a citywide worker safety campaign to encourage construction workers to properly wear their safety harnesses at all times while working at a construction site, according to a press release.

Congresswoman DeLauro introduces food safety reform legislation (2/5)

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn. -3) introduced the Food Safety Modernization Act, which aims to fix systemic problems in the U.S. food safety system by modernizing food safety laws and establishing a separate Food Safety Administration headed by an expert in food safety within the Department of Health and Human Services, according to a press statement on the Congressswoman’s Web site.

Kentucky coal-fired power plant to spend more than $135 million to settle Clean Air Act violations (2/4)

Kentucky Utilities (KU), a coal-fired electric utility, has agreed to pay a $1.4 million civil penalty and spend approximately $135 million on pollution controls to resolve violations of the Clean Air Act, the Department of Justice and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced yesterday.
