State governors compete in obesity prevention initiative (1/8)

During the two-week period from January 1st through January 14th, state leaders will compete in the Capitol Steps Challenge, designed to emphasize the correlation between increased activity levels and good health, according to a recent press release. The Capitol Steps Challenge is the first phase in a year-long initiative by Virgin HealthMiles — a developer of employee wellness programs — to raise awareness regarding childhood obesity in America.

EPA joins grassroots effort to celebrate science (1/8)

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has joined with the Coalition on the Public Understanding of Science (COPUS) — a grassroots network of more than 400 universities, scientific societies, and organizations — to celebrate The Year of Science 2009, according to a recent agency press release. COPUS was established to engage the public in science by showcasing how science works, who scientists are, and why science matters in our communities and everyday lives.

Tyson Foods pleads guilty, will pay $500,000 criminal fine for worker's death (1/7)

January 7, 2009
Tyson Foods Inc. has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Arkansas and agreed to pay the maximum fine for willfully violating worker safety regulations that led to a worker’s death in its River Valley Animal Foods (RVAF) plant in Texarkana, Ark., the Justice Department announced.

Advocacy groups target seven worker safety priorities for federal action (1/7)

The National Council on Occupational Safety and Health and the Occupational Health and Safety Section of the American Public Health Association released yesterday “Protecting Workers on the Job: Seven Priorities for Federal action in 2009.” According to a press release from the National COSH, the list represents “a platform of recommendations aimed at reversing the erosion of the worker safety protections that has put the nation's workers at a heightened risk of injury, illness and death.”

OSHA finds airline in violation of whistleblower protections (1/6)

OSHA has ordered American Airlines Inc. to reimburse two pilots for sick time, interest and any other benefits associated with sick time following an investigation into the pilots’ allegations that the company retaliated against them for reporting they were too sick to fly, according to an OSHA press release.
