AHA blasts California bill that blocks new sugary drink taxes

July 3, 2018
The American Heart Association (AHA) is sharply critical of a bill passed last week in California that prevents local communities in the state from adopting any new local sugary drink taxes for the next 12 years. The AHA calls Assembly Bill 1838 “a last-minute, backroom deal negotiated and written in secret by beverage industry lobbyists and their allies” and warns that it is a significant step backwards in the ongoing effort to reduce overconsumption of sugary drinks.

Putting a price tag on a person’s life could make America safer and fairer

What is the monetary value of a person’s life? Vanderbilt economist W. Kip Viscusi says putting a price tag on the value of a person’s life makes people and products safer. Viscusi defines the “value of statistical life” or VSL as the dollar amount that people are willing to pay to avoid an expected death tied to a faulty product or job-related accident. His current estimate of the value of statistical life is $10 million.

DOL rolls out new health care plan for small businesses

June 25, 2018
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) says its new Association Health Plans (AHP) rule will enable small companies to more easily afford to offer health insurance to their employees. The AHP – which stems from an Executive Order by President Trump, will allow small businesses, including self-employed workers, to band together by geography or industry to obtain healthcare coverage as if they were a single large employer.

Coal companies to pay less to in-debt black lung program

June 18, 2018
The Black Lung Benefits Program is more than $4 billion dollars in debt, and a 55 percent reduction scheduled at the end of 2018 in the production tax paid by coal companies will cause that deficit to nearly quadruple over the next 30 years, according to a recent report by the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO).

Stakeholders get more time to comment on crane operator certification

OSHA announced Friday that it will extend the comment period on the proposed rule on crane operator certification. Comments will now be accepted through July 5, 2018. This extension allows stakeholders more time to review the proposed rule.
