In a study of healthy volunteers, National Institutes of Health researchers found that our brains may solidify the memories of new skills we just practiced a few seconds earlier by taking a short rest. The results highlight the critically important role rest may play in learning. “Everyone thinks you need to ‘practice, practice, practice’ when learning something new. Instead, we found that resting, early and often, may be just as critical to learning as practice,” said Leonardo G. Cohen, M.D., Ph.D.

The International Glove Association (IGA) is pleased to announce that glove expert Matt Piotrowski has been named president of the association, effective March 17, 2019. Matt is a Product Manager for Showa Group, one of the world's leading producers of hand protection products. Known globally as pioneers and innovators in the glove industry, Showa is solely focused on the start-to-finish manufacturing of household and industrial hand protection.

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) welcomed its new director of professional development today. Chris Ballman, PHR, MSHR, will oversee the Society’s comprehensive educational offerings that advance the careers of occupational safety and health professionals worldwide. He will also provide leadership oversight of ASSP’s largest annual event – a Professional Development Conference and Exhibition that attracts more than 5,000 industry professionals.

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) has released a report on women and safety in the modern workplace – a follow-up to its Women’s Workplace Safety Summit held last October near Chicago. The report focuses on three main challenges faced by women in the workplace and offers potential solutions. It is just one outcome of ASSP’s ongoing initiative to improve diversity and inclusion throughout the safety industry while ultimately better protecting workers everywhere.

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) and the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) have formalized a memorandum of understanding that outlines how the organizations will collaborate on advancing workplace safety and health over the next five years. ASSP President Rixio Medina, CSP, CPP, and KOSHA President Dooyong Park signed the agreement at a global workplace safety and health sustainability event in Paris.

ACGIH®, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, will honor its 2019 Awards recipients at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition (AIHce) held May 2022, 2019 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Each year, ACGIH® honors individuals and/or groups who have made significant contributions to the profession through their leadership and dedication. This year’s awardees join that distinguished list.

Dr. Timothy Ludwig, Managing Commissioner of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies’ Commission on Accreditation for Behavioral Safety, is pleased to announce that Sandy Knott, of Peru, Illinois, was recently elected to the Commission as an Associate Commissioner. Sandy was first introduced to the Center in 2004 working with Drs. Bill Hopkins and Dwight Harshbarger during the early years of our Accreditation program.

Haws® is pleased to announce that Quality and Compliance Manager, Melanie Mayer has been recognized by EHS Daily Advisor for Young Safety Professional Excellence. Melanie has led many efforts to enhance safety and quality programs at Haws. Such activities include managing safety and quality teams, ensuring that safety standards and practices are communicated and adhered to by all employees regardless of their title, developing a LEAN Manufacturing internal training program, driving the SHARP (Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program) certification, to name a few.
