Combustible dust and particulate solids can pose a serious hazard in many industries. Over the last 100 years, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) committees created many industry- and commodity-specific standards to mitigate those hazards. The recently released NFPA 660 Standard for Combustible Dusts and Particulate Solids consolidates requirements from historical standards into a single combined standard. During the development of the standard, significant effort was made to harmonize common or fundamental requirements that apply to all industries and types of dust while still retaining requirements unique to specific industries or materials. The consolidated standard should make identifying and mitigating combustible dust hazards easier for users, particularly those who handle multiple types of combustible dust. This presentation will provide an overview of the new standard and discuss best practices to assess and mitigate hazards in a facility.
Learning Objectives:
Understanding the structure of NFPA 660 and how it can be applied to different industries
How to determine if combustible dust or powders are present in a facility
Performing a Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) and mitigating hazards
Management systems for reducing hazards
