CSB to offer Spanish language safety products

November 26, 2015

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) is launching a new initiative aimed at expanding the agency’s reach to better include Spanish speaking stakeholders.

The CSB will soon begin to offer news releases outlining key safety information and lessons learned in Spanish. The information will include news releases about the final investigation report into the massive explosion and fire that occurred in 2009 at the Caribbean Petroleum terminal facility near San Juan, Puerto Rico, and regarding the ongoing investigation into the fatal methyl mercaptan release that took place in 2014 at DuPont’s pesticide manufacturing plant in La Porte, Texas.

Chairperson Vanessa Allen Sutherland said, “The CSB has amassed a tremendous wealth of knowledge on chemical accident hazards through its high quality accident investigations. One of my primary goals as Chairperson of the CSB is to ensure that the agency's knowledge reaches and impacts as many stakeholders as possible. By offering Spanish language safety products, we are helping to advance that goal.”

In the future, the agency plans to also offer versions of its highly acclaimed safety videos with Spanish subtitles. Please continue to check www.csb.gov for updates about this new initiative.

The CSB is an independent federal agency charged with investigating serious chemical accidents. The agency's board members are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. CSB investigations look into all aspects of chemical accidents, including physical causes such as equipment failure as well as inadequacies in regulations, industry standards, and safety management systems.

The Board does not issue citations or fines but does make safety recommendations to plants, industry organizations, labor groups, and regulatory agencies such as OSHA and EPA. Visit our website, www.csb.gov.
