A construction worker on his second day on the job fell 53 stories to his death yesterday at a downtown Los Angeles high-rise slated to be the tallest building in the West, officials said.

The electrician fell about 12:30 p.m. at the site of the Wilshire Grand and landed on a passing car. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The driver of the car he landed on is hospitalized in stable conditions.

The cause of the man's fall was under investigation by police and Cal/OSHA.

The CEO of Martin Project Management, which is overseeing  the construction of the skyscraper, said there have been no injuries since construction began at the site three years ago. Chris Martin said all workers get safety training. He did not say whether the worker had on a safety harness when he fell.
