2 Mississippi police officers dead, suspect in custody after shootout
BROOKHAVEN, Miss. — Two police officers were shot and killed following an early Saturday morning confrontation in Mississippi, authorities said. Warren Strain of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said at a news conference that the officers were called to a house in the city of Brookhaven at about 5 a.m. for a report of shots fired. Amid an exchange of gunfire, both officers were “mortally wounded” and then pronounced dead at a local hospital, Strain said. He identified the weapon used as a handgun but would not elaborate. Authorities identified the deceased officers as Patrolman James White, 35; and Cpl. Zack Moak, 31. Both were wearing bulletproof vests at the time and were equipped with body and dashboard cameras. White arrived on the scene first, and Moak arrived next.
Two men killed in Wyoming trench collapse
TETON COUNTY, Wyoming – A trench collapsed in Indian Springs Friday afternoon, trapping and killing two men. The victims have been identified as Juan Baez-Sanchez and Victoriano Garcia-Perez. Initial investigation indicates the most likely cause of death to be suffocation. “This was a very tragic accident, and we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” Teton County Undersheriff Matt Carr said in a statement. The men were both workers at a residential construction site at 120 S. Indian Springs Drive. Baez-Sanchez and Garcia-Perez were believed to be have been working in a 12- to 15-foot-deep trench before it collapsed. According to the Teton County GIS, the construction site is owned by Wilson developer Jamie Mackay. No more details about the victims, including their ages or towns of residence, have been released.
Latimer man dies at job site east of Fort Dodge
DUNCOMBE, IA — A Latimer man is dead after an accident at a job site east of Fort Dodge Friday evening, according to Josh Van Waes, Webster County sheriff’s deputy. Jose Gomez, 43, died at the scene. Workers were reportedly pouring concrete at 2950 200th St. when the boom of a concrete pump truck landed on Gomez, Van Waes reported. Gomez was pinned under the boom. Details of the accident remain under investigation. However, the pump truck could be seen from the road with its boom extended and its front wheels well off the ground as if it had partially tipped over.
Truck driver killed on I-10 in Santa Rosa County
SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WEAR) — A truck driver was killed on Interstate 10 eastbound in Santa Rosa County. Just after 2a.m. on Friday, state troopers say the truck rear-ended a semi near mile marker 20. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the truck’s cab was engulfed in flames. The FHP report says traffic was stopped for construction.
One dead in workplace accident in Scotland County
Scotland County, N.C. (WPDE) — One person has died following a workplace accident this week on the jobsite of Edwards Mill Products in Laurinburg , according to N.C. Department of Labor Public Information Officer Mary Katherine Revels. Revels said the person’s employer is Quality Construction of America Inc. Revels sent the following statement in an email about the matter: “The preliminary information we have available at this time is: employees were installing a log deck and were putting plates between the metal deck runners. While the decedent was adjusting one, a tack broke and the employee fell about 17-18 feet through the deck runners. The employee later died at the hospital.
Workplace accident results in death
MONTICELLO – The Monticello Fire Department confirmed that a person died in workplace accident on Fr[p=iday afternoon. The accident happened about 1:15 p.m., Capt. Robert Hickman said. Reports were that it happened at a loading ramp on Hanawalt Street near Railroad Street. Hickman said he wasn’t able to give more details, and the call to him was ended due to sound interference.
City employee dies of injuries suffered on job
Durango, NM — A Durango city employee died earlier this month of injuries suffered while on the job, officials said Friday. The employee, Moises Dominguez, worked for the city’s solid waste, trash and recycling division for just under four years before being injured on the job, said Assistant City Manager Amber Blake.
Security officer killed in LoDo shooting, Denver police say
DENVER , CO– A security officer was shot and killed early Friday morning during a confrontation with a suspect involved in an earlier shooting that critically injured one person, Denver police said.mIt happened in the area of 15th and Market streets just before 2 a.m. in Lower Downtown Denver. “A security guard working in the area confronted a possible suspect in that shooting near 14th St. A physical altercation ensued between the security guard and the suspect. During this confrontation, the suspect shot and killed the security officer,” a Denver police spokesman said Friday night. The victim who died has been identified as 28-year-old Lucardio Kroener.
2 Waste Management employees killed in crash involving dump truck, garbage truck
ELKHORN, Neb. — The Nebraska State Patrol has released the names of two men killed when their garbage truck crashed in Elkhorn Friday afternoon.Troopers say the garbage truck driven by 26 year old Pierre Neal and passenger 54 year old Rogelio Sanchez Marin, both of Omaha, was northbound on 204th Street as it approached Fort Street. Neal drove the truck into the southbound lane in an attempt to pass a pickup and trailer that was turning right onto Fort Street. As that happened, a dump truck turned left from Fort Street into the southbound lane of 204th Street. Neal over-corrected while trying to get back into his own lane and lost control, flipping the truck onto its side. As the truck slid, it ran into the dump truck. Neal and Sanchez Marin died at the scene. The driver of the dump truck, 55 year old Darold Ashcraft of Omaha suffered minor injuries.
Liberty parks worker dies after train hits work truck
Liberty, MO — A Liberty parks worker has died after a city work truck was hit by a train Wednesday morning. Cameron Leeds, 26, of Gladstone was driving the truck when he attempted to cross a double set of train tracks on a service road south of Old Highway 210, east of Missouri 291, about 9:40 a.m. “We have lost a young and vibrant member of our Liberty family today,” Liberty City Administrator Curt Wenson said in a written statement. “Cameron has left an indelible mark on the Parks & Rec Department and the City of Liberty as a whole.”
Funeral Arrangements Made for Construction Worker Killed in Manistee Co.
Bear Lake, MI — We have continuing coverage of the Manistee County construction site crash that killed one worker and seriously injured another. We now know when the worker will be laid to rest. The crash happened on U.S. 31 near Russell Street in Bear Lake Tuesday afternoon. Deputies say the two workers were hit by a car driven by a woman from Bear Lake. Twenty-year-old Andre Alvesteffer of Pentwater died at the scene. His visitation will be Saturday and he’ll be laid to rest that same day. A second worker had to be airlifted to the hospital, where he continues to recover.
City Worker Killed in SW Oklahoma Industrial Accident
Mangum City, OK — Authorities in southwestern Oklahoma say a municipal worker in Mangum has been electrocuted after coming in contact with a high-voltage power line. Mangum City Manager Dave Andren said Wednesday that 28-year-old Charlie McLaughlin died while loading a roll-off dumpster onto a hauler. Andren says the accident occurred when chain-link debris in the dumpster became entangled in a high voltage power line. He says McLaughlin was electrocuted when he came in contact with his truck and died instantly. McLaughlin started working for Mangum’s streets department in June. Andren says McLaughlin’s death is being mourned by his co-workers and many others in the city of about 3,000 residents in Greer County.
Bradford man killed in industrial accident identified
BRADFORD COUNTY, Fla.(WCJB)– Bradford County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an accident at a private business this morning where a man was killed. The incident took place at Dar Pro- in Hampton.
Marcus Smith, 33 was killed after an industrial accident. According to deputies he was cleaning a tank and accidentally ingested some fumes, he was taken to Shands in Starke with Cardiac issues and died at the hospital.
Man Killed After Falling off Ladder in Sterling: Police
STERLING, VA—A man was killed Wednesday afternoon when he fell off a ladder at a residential construction site in the 20500 block of Burgess Terrace, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries. The man’s identity has not been released.
Truck driver killed Monday in I-40 crash at Shamrock
SHAMROCK, Texas (KVII) — A driver was killed Monday evening after his tractor-trailer rig left the roadway, struck a concrete bridge support and caught fire just inside the Shamrock city limits, according to a DPS report issued Wednesday. James Jenson, 36, of Breckenridge, was pronounced dead at the scene by Wheeler County Justice of the Peace Rick Walden, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety news release.
Truck driver killed after being pinned between tractor trailers
Nashville, TN — The death of a truck driver at a Nashville truck lot early Wednesday morning appears to be accidental, Metro police reported. James H. Moore, 69, of Kenton, was found dead at the Averitt Express lot in south Nashville around 4:40 a.m. Wednesday. A call to police indicated a deceased person had been discovered. Moore was found pinned between two tractor trailers. Police reported the parking break on Moore’s truck had not been set, and that the vehicle is believed to have rolled forward, pinning him between the passenger side of his truck and the driver’s side of another.
Plant nursery worker hit, killed by box truck in East Moriches, police say
East Moriches, NY — A plant nursery employee was killed Wednesday when a box truck hit her as it was backing up in East Moriches, Suffolk police said. Julia Molina, 49, who worked for Kurt Weiss Greenhouses, was struck about 11 a.m. by the truck as it was driven by a fellow employee on the north service road of Sunrise Highway by Chapman Boulevard, police said. The collision occurred next to property owned by the nursery, police said. Molina, of Mastic, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Man electrocuted while working on Charlotte County home
Punta Gorda, FL — A worker was killed in Charlotte County after he was electrocuted. The Charlotte County’s Sheriff’s Office said 42-year-old Leslie Morse grabbed a hot wire. The incident happened at the intersection of Oakview and Westchester in the River Club community in Punta Gorda. Natalie Nieding, who was helping Morse to clear land in the gated community, said she was using an excavator to remove a tree, but did not know the tree was wrapped by a live ground wire. Morse worked for Morse Excavating and Land Surveying. Nieding was not injured.
Logger Crushed to Death
Roy, WA — A logger, Richard Bird, was killed when he was caught between two logs after the yarder engineer slacked the turn down onto the landing. Bird went to unbell the three chokers, and one chocked log slid back, pulling the other chokers tight and got caught in between the logs. Bird worked for Gulley Logging. Police still looking for suspects in homicide of Aiken cemetery worker
Aiken, SC — Investigators with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office are still working to figure out who shot and killed a worker at the Southlawn Cemetery on Whiskey Road in Aiken. The body of James D. Maxwell, of Aiken, was discovered Monday in his small living quarters at the rear of the office of Southlawn Cemetery, 4524 Whiskey Road, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton in a news release. Maxwell, who was a worker at the cemetery, died from multiple gunshot wounds, Carlton said.
Contractor dies in accident at St. Ambrose University
Davenport, IA — A Davenport man died after a fall at St. Ambrose University on Wednesday. The Davenport Police Department responded around 10:37 a.m. to a report of a workplace accident that occurred in the 500 block of West Locust Street. Preliminary information determined that work was being done at the university’s Galvin Fine Arts Center and a worker had sustained an injury consistent with a fall. The worker was transported by Medic ambulance to Genesis Medical Center for treatment. Shortly upon arrival, the victim was pronounced dead.
Construction Worker Dies from Possible Electrocution
MIAMI, FL — Officials say a construction worker who was possibly electrocuted while working on the elevator of a Florida high-rise has died. The Miami Herald reports that rescue workers responded to the Midtown Miami construction site around noon Tuesday. Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll says the site’s foreman told rescue workers the man was working on the interior elevator electrical system when he stopped breathing and collapsed. Co-workers performed CPR until rescue workers arrived. The man was taken to a nearby trauma center, where he died.
Worker dies at JOANN fabric store in Hillsboro
HILLSBORO, Ore. – Emergency personnel found a worker at a JoAnn Fabric Store in Hillsboro unresponsive early Wednesday morning. The person was treated, but died at the scene. Hillsboro Fire Department responded to a report of a medical at JoAnn Fabric and Craft at 7270 NE Butler St. shortly after 3:30 a.m. Officials say a worker was on scaffolding and had been unresponsive for about 20 minutes.
Modesto firefighter dies of job-related cancer
MODESTO, Calif. — The Modesto Fire Department is mourning the loss of one their firefighters. Retired Capt. Greg Ewert lost his eight-year battle with job-related cancer over the weekend. He was only 61-years-old. He spent more than half of his life working as a Modesto firefighter and, because his cancer was considered job-related, this is being called a line of duty death. Ewert is the 5th firefighter they’ve lost on the job since 1957.
1 person dead after explosion at chemical plant
ARAB, AL — One person is dead following an explosion at a chemical plant in north Alabama. Arab Fire Chief Ricky Phillips tells WHNT-TV that a contract worker died in a blast that happened Tuesday at Umicore Specialty Chemicals in Arab. The explosion involved an empty sulfuric acid tank in a part of the plant that is still under construction. Authorities say a group of workers was making connections to the tank when the accident occurred. Officials say there isn’t any danger to the public. The company’s website calls it a leader in recycling and refining cobalt and nickel specialty chemicals, which it also markets.
Columbus firefighter dies of cancer, more are being diagnosed
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) — A 29-year veteran of the Columbus fire service died last week after complications from cancer forced him to leave work and retire at the end of the summer. Ed Gibbons spent his entire career on the Ladder 2 team, according to Columbus Division of Fire spokesman Chief Steven Martin. The death comes amid an epidemic of cancer among city firefighters, and fire personnel across the nation. In 2015, the city’s firefighter union said one in 14 firefighters had a past or current cancer diagnosis. In 2018, the figure is nearing one in 10.
On-duty Memphis volunteer firefighter dies
MEMPHIS, Mich. (WXYZ) – A volunteer firefighter for the Memphis Fire Department has died, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Firefighter Robert James Phillips II, 62, died on Sept. 23. The cause of his death is currently unknown. USFA is identifying it as an on-duty death. According to the administration, Phillips was found unresponsive by his wife at their home. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Michigan truck driver killed in weekend rollover crash
HOLTON TOWNSHIP, MI – A truck driver died Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle rollover crash in eastern Muskegon County, according to the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office. The truck driver has been identified as Joseph Pell, of Fremont, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release issued Tuesday, Sept. 25, by the sheriff’s office. Pell was pinned inside his vehicle following the crash and was unresponsive when deputies arrived.
Farmworker Killed in Machinery Incident
Prosser, WA — A Gold Gate Hop Ranch employee, Omar Gomez, was killed while harvesting hops. Two employees, including Gomez, were driving a harvester through the hop field and it failed to clear the top cable. The cable got caught on the harvester and broke loose, creating a slingshot effect, back towards the back employee hitting him on the chin area.
