At the Grainger Customer Show in Orlando this past March, the focus wasn't just on the gear in the catalog, but on the expertise behind it. On the show floor, I talked with Ryan Knuppel, a director of services at Grainger, to discuss how Grainger is evolving to meet the complex needs of modern facilities through a blend of board-certified expertise, third-party service networks, and cutting-edge safety technology. Everyone I spoke with at the Grainger show emphasized that Grainger is not a traditional product supplier but aims to work with their customers to offer a broad range of services, from training, technical support, and even safety consulting. I found this fascinating as many large companies already employ safety professionals or EHS specialists.

Expert Facility Assessments

Knuppel said the process begins with a boots-on-the-ground approach. Grainger utilizes a team of board-certified safety professionals, strategically located across the U.S. to provide comprehensive coverage for all of their accounts. These experts conduct in-depth facility assessments to evaluate the current state of a customer’s safety program. By identifying hidden hazards and assessing potential risks, they help customers see the gaps in their compliance that might otherwise go unnoticed.

“So whenever a customer is looking for additional help with just trying to better understand how they can operate a safer facility, these (safety professionals) can come in and do facility assessments and really try to get an idea of the current condition of their safety program,” Knuppel said. “What are their hazards, their risk? Where do they have exposure to potential regulators? And these are safety professionals.”

Once these deficiencies are identified, Grainger provides a dual-path solution: immediate fixes through their extensive product assortment or long-term strategies through specialized services.

A Vetted Service Network

One of the most significant shifts in Grainger’s strategy is its role as a facilitator for specialized labor. Recognizing that many companies lack in-house safety teams, Grainger has developed a robust, vetted network of third-party safety services.

“That's something we have found that it's important for customers. (Finding professionals) when they don't have time to go out to find these companies themselves. So we are out there looking, watching the trends in safety, trying to figure out, okay, well, what do we need to make sure we have (these resources) available for our customers.

“Many customers have sought help for safety problems that simply cannot be solved by products alone," Knuppel noted.

This network connects customers with safety consultants for procedure writing and specialized training; turnkey engineering firms for complex equipment installations; and digital service providers to address emerging trends in safety tech.

By maintaining this curated network, Grainger ensures that even if a customer lacks internal expertise, they have a direct line to qualified professionals who can implement safety measures from start to finish.

Becoming a Thought Partner

Ultimately, the goal is to move beyond the transaction. Knuppel emphasizes that Grainger aims to be a "thought partner," providing insights and compliance guidance based on regional trends and field data. By balancing production needs with safety considerations, they provide a comprehensive ecosystem that includes everything from online training documentation to ongoing site support.

“The way I like to position our role to our customers is thought partner,” Knuppel said. “So a lot of times our business partners, our customers, are like, Hey, I know I have a hazard, but how do I get it done?”

In an era where workplace safety is increasingly data-driven and resource-constrained, Grainger is positioning itself not just as a place to buy a hard hat, but as a comprehensive solution provider dedicated to the "why" and "how" of keeping workers safe.
