An employee was killed at a Fremont, Calif., car dealership this week when a car lift fell on him, according to local press reports.

The 48-year-old victim was killed when a car lift collapsed, crushing his head, police reported.

A mechanic at the dealership, the man had been working on a car at the time of the accident, according to Cal/OSHA spokesman Dean Fryer.

The lift became stuck and when the man tried to release pressure on the lift, it fell quickly, crushing him underneath.

Cal/OSHA, the state agency responsible for investigating workplace accidents, has begun to interview witnesses and inspect equipment, Fryer reported. The agency will make a determination if the equipment was faulty or if the victim had not been properly trained to use the equipment.
