BROOKHAVEN, Miss. — Two police officers were shot and killed following an early Saturday morning confrontation in Mississippi, authorities said. Warren Strain of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said at a news conference that the officers were called to a house in the city of Brookhaven at about 5 a.m. for a report of shots fired.
Safety issues are prominent in the new five-year-contract that registered nurses with the California Nurses Association/ National Nurses United (CNA/NNU) at the University of California (UC) just voted overwhelmingly to ratify.
Workplace violence, infectious disease protections and safe staffing protections were addressed in the agreement, which covers more than 14,000 registered nurses at five major medical centers, 10 student health centers, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The timing was coincidental. On the same day a shooter opened fire in a Fifth Third Bank in downtown Cincinnati, killing three people and wounding two others, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker convened an active shooter/hostile event response (ASHER) program for first responders and school officials at the headquarters of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
A construction supervisor who was overseeing work on the Fifth Third Bank building in downtown Cincinnati was among those killed when a gunman opened there yesterday morning, according to news sources. A spokesman for Gilbane Building Company said the company was “absolutely grief-stricken” over the death of 64-year-old Richard Newcomer, who was working on the third floor of the building at the time of the shooting.

In a letter to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary accompanying an assessment of some of Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s decisions, the American Public Health Association (APHA) said; “We are deeply concerned by many of Judge Kavanaugh's views and previous decisions related to public health.”
REDDING, CALIF. —The National Park Service reports a second firefighter has died while battling the Ferguson Fire in Mariposa County. On Sunday morning, Capt. Brian Hughes of the Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots was killed. According to the National Park Service, 33-year-old Hughes was on the east side of the fire in an area with many dead trees when he was struck by one.
MAXTON, N.C. (WNCN) – One worker died and another was hurt in an incident involving a large trash bin at the Campbell’s Soup plant in Robeson County on Sunday, media reports said. WMBF reported that a Dumpster fell on two workers around 11 a.m. at the plant at 2120 N.C. Highway 71 in Maxton.
