The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has a lot of friends. In a recent letter, more than 150 organizations that make up the “Friends of NIOSH” urged congressional leaders to disregard President Obama’s proposed elimination (in his FY 2015 budget) of Education and Research Centers (ERCs) and Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing Program and maintain funding for them, as well as for NIOSH’s other programs.

The 2014 Supplement to the Documentation of the Threshold Limit Values and Biological Exposure Indices, 7th Edition is now available. The Supplement contains Documentation for the substances that were on the Notice of Intended Changes for 2013, with their corresponding values and notations, that have been approved and adopted as Threshold Limit Values (TLVs®) and Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs®).
The American Industrial Hygiene Association® (AIHA) has announced the results of its 2014 - 2015 election for the AIHA Board of Directors. The new board members will be inducted at AIHA’s annual business meeting on Thursday, June 5, during the 2014 American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition (AIHce) in San Antonio.

The American Industrial Hygiene Association® (AIHA) has added 43 new distinguished Fellows, recognized for their significant contributions to the field of industrial hygiene, to its list. The Fellow classification is limited to no more than five percent of the AIHA membership.
ACGIH® will honor its 2014 awards recipients at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition (AIHce) held May 31-June 5, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas. Each year, ACGIH® honors individuals and/or groups who have made significant contributions to the profession through their leadership and dedication. This year’s awardees join that distinguished list.
Multidisciplinary global meeting to be held in Washington, D.C., in October 2018

The American Industrial Hygiene Association® (AIHA) today announced its successful bid to bring the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) Scientific Conference to Washington, D.C. This prestigious conference and exhibition is set to take place in October 2018 and is expected to attract approximately 1,000 leading occupational hygiene experts from around the world.
The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and Cintas Corporation are seeking nominations for the inaugural Innovation Award in Occupational Safety Management. The award will recognize individuals who have addressed workplace safety challenges in innovative ways.
For the record, I’m against euphemisms; I believe masking the inadequacies or social stigma of one state by calling it something else is wrong-headed and pathetic. I’ve been called a lot of things, but politically correct isn’t one of them.
“When I grow up, I want to be an industrial hygienist.” Hearing a ten-year-old girl say those words would probably warrant a double take. While there might be some little girls out there dreaming about one day conducting research and working in a laboratory, studies suggest that more often, it’s a ten-year-old boy who will have the dream and will realize it when he grows up.
