This is the time of year when OSHA announces their top ten citations of the past fiscal year.  There are few changes in this top- ten list year after year.  Even though the list is of the complete standard’s name, it is usually only one or two sections of a standard that repeatedly makes this list. 

OSHA has opened an attack on the largest employers with this recordkeeping initiative. These are the employers who have safety professionals on staff. They are the ones with safety and health management programs. They are "The Best" according to Dr. Michaels in his I2P2 propaganda.

In a press tele-conference last week, OSHA chief Dr. David Michaels once again took the opportunity to promote the much-ballyhooed and controversial Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (I2P2). “Certainly, we encourage employers to adopt and embrace I2P2,” he said. “In the VPP (Voluntary Protection Program) thousand of companies have adopted the principles of I2P2. So we know it works."

There was a statement in a commentary in the Wall Street Journal a couple of months ago: "A fundamental principle in medicine is that if you get the diagnosis wrong, you'll probably apply the wrong therapy. A corollary is that if the therapy isn't working, increasing the dose may make things worse."

At AIHce 2013, AIHA Director of Government Affair Aaron Trippler gave an informal assessment of the political side of occupational safety and health, circa 2014. The reason nothing is getting done in DC is both parties have lost control of their members, said Trippler.

Prominent at this year’s AIHce were seminars and workshops reflecting the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s (AIHA biennial membership survey listing top public policy issues of concern to AIHA members and the occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) profession over the next two years.

Actually OSHA chief Dr. David Michaels did not give a “talk” at Tuesday morning’s opening session at the AIHce. Instead, the packed assembly room was treated to a conversation between Dr. Michaels and one of his predecessors, John Henshaw, who headed OSHA during the Bush II administration.

Updating PELs, OSHA’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program (I2P2) and getting more respect are the top upcoming issues for safety professionals, according to a survey conducted by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA).
