OSHA cites Alabama contractor after explosion kills 2 workers

Cal/OSHA implements updated heat safety regulations

November 5, 2010
Cal/OSHA recently implemented updated safety standards for employees working in outdoor heat, according to a press release. The revisions to the Heat Illness Prevention Standard, approved by the Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board on Aug. 19, became effective on Nov. 4th. The revised standards provide clarification of the shade requirement, including temperature triggers and address high-heat requirements.

MSHA asks for preliminary injunction against Freedom Energy Mining Co.

In an unprecedented legal move, the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration, according to a press release, has filed with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky a motion for preliminary injunction against Freedom Energy Mining Co.'s Mine No. 1. Located in Pike County, Ky., Freedom's Mine No. 1 is owned by Massey Energy Co.

Survey: Weak job market to continue as only 18% plan to hire over next six months

November 5, 2010
In a national survey of U.S. Manufacturing Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) and senior comptrollers conducted by Grant Thornton LLP, the U.S. member firm of Grant Thornton International Ltd, only 18 percent plan to increase hiring in the next six months, while 22 percent plan to decrease hiring, a recent press release states. In addition, a large majority believe that the best way to create jobs is to cut corporate and personal tax rates and that the U.S. economy will not recover until the second half of 2011 or later.

EPA fugitive arrested in the Dominican Republic

November 5, 2010
Nineteen months after she fled her federal sentencing hearing, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fugitive Albania Deleon was captured on Saturday in the Dominican Republic, the agency announced in a recent press release. Dominican law enforcement authorities with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service, arrested Deleon, who had disguised her appearance and assumed a false identity, following a vehicle stop. Deleon was wanted by EPA for certifying individuals as having asbestos removal training when they never took the required course.

Mothers and doctors should think twice before diagnosing the flu, says one University of Missouri (MU) researcher, according to a recent press release. The illness could be Q fever, a disease that is very similar to the flu and on the rise around the world, due to an ability to replicate in almost any animal before infecting humans, the release states.

OSHA fines tree trimming company $146,000 for failing to protect workers near energized transmission lines

November 4, 2010
OSHA has cited ABC Professional Tree Services Inc., a Houston, Texas-based company specializing in tree trimming for public utility lines clearance, with $146,000 in proposed penalties for allegedly failing to ensure employees were trained to work near energized transmission and distribution lines, an agency press release says. The fines are the result of a May jobsite inspection in Morris, Ill.
