New website on environmental public health to include oil spill updates (6/14)

American Public Health Association announced in a recent press release that the organization has launched a new website that spotlights a range of issues related to health and the environment. From chemical exposure, food systems and the built environment to climate change and challenges currently facing the environmental public health workforce, along with emerging issues such as the Gulf Coast oil spill.

Policy set to protect oil spill cleanup workers as heat rises along the Gulf (6/10)

To protect the health and safety of Gulf oil spill cleanup workers amid rising summer temperatures, the Unified Area Command has established a policy requiring all on-shore and near-shore cleanup workers to follow a work/rest cycle to ensure their safety and well-being — which is determined based on the heat index, type of work being performed and required protective clothing.

Labor Secretary Solis tours Gulf region to ensure oil spill worker safety (6/10)

June 10, 2010
At the direction of President Obama, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis traveled to Louisiana yesterday to inspect efforts to ensure the health, safety and well-being of workers affected by the BP oil spill. During a two-day tour, she will meet with beach cleanup workers in Port Fourchon, La.; discuss worker safety efforts with OSHA staff; and visit the Terrebonne Career Solutions Center, where she will meet with Vietnamese workers affected by the spill.

For the first time in three years, the number of on-the-job firefighter deaths in the U.S. has dropped below 100, according to a press release from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The NFPA’s annual Firefighter Fatality Report, released recently at the NFPA Conference & Expo, shows a sharp drop in the number of fatalities in 2009.
