Falls – many involving ladders – are a leading cause of workplace injuries, according to a NIOSH study.
Researchers examined data from several surveillance systems, including the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses and the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System – Work Supplement.
Fatal falls, slips, and trips were up 10 percent in 2014 from the previous year. Falls to lower level were up 9 percent to 647 from 595 in 2013, and falls on the same level increased 17 percent. In 532 of the 647 fatal falls to lower level, the height of the fall was known.

Deb Group earned recognition for its “Fight Occupational Skin Disease” campaign.

ASSE is disappointed that this Administration did not complete rulemaking to consider requiring every employer to adopt a safety and health management program.
The use of leading indicators is a growing hot topic in occupational and environmental health and safety. The Campbell Institute at the National Safety Council has been studying leading indicators for the past two years to help more organizations take advantage of their predictive power.
Environmentalists are cheering the EPA’s designation of several areas in east Texas near coal-fired power plants as being out of compliance with clean air standards. The EPA said it had identified high levels of sulfur dioxide pollution in Luminant’s Martin Lake, Big Brown and Monticello coal plants.
A serious movement is afoot to systematize the concept of “safety culture.” The International Labour Organization has put forward a definition of a “preventative safety and health culture,” and ISO is apparently discussing prospective prescriptive requirements for a “positive culture.”
