More miners back on the job after filing discrimination complaints

Stepped-up efforts by the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to educate miners about their safety and health rights, investigate discrimination complaints,and take legal action have led to a marked increase in the number of miners temporarily reinstated to their jobs after filing complaints of discrimination in the form of a suspension, layoff, discharge or other adverse action.

ASSE offers tips on how to increase work safety for older workers

Senior workers have highest fatality rates
August 31, 2012

With recent statistics showing workers in the 65 and older age group having the highest number of on-the-job deaths in the U.S. in 2010, and, with older workers (defined as those aged 55+ years) being the nation’s fastest growing segment of the working population, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) urges employers to design workplaces with positive policies and programs to optimize the safety and health of older workers.

Norfolk Southern again fires workers for reporting injuries

For the third time in less than three months, Norfolk Southern has been ordered to pay penalties for illegally firing two workers. The latest fines levied by OSHA for violating whistleblower protection laws total $932,070.

Deadly Venezuela refinery fire finally under control

August 30, 2012

A Venezuelan refinery disaster that killed dozens of people and damaged hundreds of homes has finally been declared over, according to the country’s Oil Minister. Rafael Ramirez said that four days after the massive explosion which sparked the fire, the site is now in a “cooling phase.”
