Trump takes aim at federal regulations

OSHA and the Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) will be among the agencies affected by an executive order signed by President Donald Trump yesterday that requires federal agencies that want to enact a new regulation to eliminate two existing regulations. The “one in, two out” plan is intended to reduce regulatory burdens on U.S. companies, especially small businesses.

Trump delays beryllium rule – will recent rules be enforced?

January 23, 2017
OSHA’s beryllium standard, published 11 days before President Trump’s inauguration, is one of the rules delayed 60 days by the Trump administration’s Jan. 20 regulatory freeze and review instructions. Federal agencies are to send no new rules to the Federal Register, withdraw rules sent but not yet published, and delay the effective date by 60 days of any rule published that has not taken effect.

Feds to issue final rule on working place examinations in metal, nonmetal mines

Will cover nearly 250K miners in U.S.
January 20, 2017
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration says it will issue its Final Rule for Examination of Working Places in Metal and Nonmetal Mines. The new rule will be published in the Federal Register on Jan. 23, 2017, and go into effect on May 23, 2017.

Congress, FAA ease medical requirements for GA pilots

January 13, 2017
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a final rule (PDF) that allows general aviation pilots to fly without holding an FAA medical certificate as long as they meet certain requirements outlined in Congressional legislation. “The United States has the world’s most robust general aviation community, and we’re committed to continuing to make it safer and more efficient to become a private pilot,” said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.

OSHA wants to amend respiratory protection standard

Makes bid to add two more fit-testing protocols
January 10, 2017
OSHA has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to add two quantitative fit-testing protocols to the agency's Respiratory Protection Standard. The protocols would apply to employers in the general, shipyard and construction industries. Appendix A of the standard contains mandatory respirator fit-testing methods that employers must use to ensure their employees' respirators fit properly and protect the wearer.

OSHA issues final rule to lower beryllium levels – cause of devastating lung diseases

January 10, 2017
A new rule issued by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration dramatically lowers workplace exposure to beryllium, a strategically important material that can cause devastating lung diseases. The new beryllium standards for general industry, construction and shipyards will require employers to take additional, practical measures to protect an estimated 62,000 workers from these serious risks.

Steelworkers’ union backs new beryllium standard

The United Steelworkers (USW) are praising OSHA for its release last week of the final rule for occupational exposure to beryllium and beryllium compounds in general industry, construction and maritime. “This has been a long time in the making,” said USW International President Leo W. Gerard.
