Three power distribution series NEIS have recently completed the revision process and have been approved by ANSI. NECA 407-2015 Standard for Installing and Maintaining Panelboards, NECA 408-2015 Standard for Installing and Maintaining Busways, and NECA 409-2015 Standard for Installing and Maintaining Dry-Type Transformers have each been revised and are now available from the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).

NECA’s National Electrical Installation Standards (NEIS) are revised on a cyclical basis based on American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) Essential Requirements for standards developers. NECA is an ANSI-Accredited Standards Development Organization.

Minimum safety requirements for installing panelboards, busways, and dry-type transformers are contained in Chapter Four of the National Electrical Code (NEC), which is titled “Equipment for General Use.” NECA 407, 408 and 409 go beyond these minimum requirements and address quality and performance criteria that are important to construction specification writers and owners. These standards also address other important elements including planning the installation, securing the equipment, protection, maintenance practices as well as equipment commissioning and testing. In fact, several NEIS are referred to from informational notes contained in the NEC.

As with all NEIS, engineers and designers can rest assured that by referring to the NEIS from plans and specifications they are establishing the confidence that owners seek relative to quality. These standards also continue to be a valuable resource by addressing many of the “how to” issues related to installing and maintaining these types of equipment. Like all NEIS, these revised editions are packed with solid, useful information the industry has come to expect from the NEIS.

NECA’s NEIS are the “go to” quality and performance installation standards for electrical construction. Primarily electrical contractors, consulting engineers, facility managers, and other professionals who design and specify for electrical construction projects use the NEIS. With their level of installation detail, the NEIS are also a valuable training tool for electrical industry. The NEIS are regularly updated and expanded to align with the latest technology and the current edition of the NEC in addition to other applicable standards.

“NECA’s National Electrical Installation Standards library has grown over the years, and as new technologies emerge, the NEIS evolve and keep pace,” stated Michael Johnston, NECA’s Executive Director of Standards and Safety. Johnston also emphasized that “the standards are constantly providing significant value to those in the electrical designing and engineering communities. The NEIS help professionals in developing design specifications in that they reduce and often eliminate specification writing time.”
