ACGIH® announces 2018 election results

ACGIH® is pleased to announce new members for its 2018 Board of Directors and its 2018 Nominating Committee.

ACGIH®’s membership elected three (3) members to serve as Directors on the Board of Directors. They are:

Shery Milz, PhD, MOD, CIH, FAIHA. Dr. Milz is an Associate Professor in the School of Population Health in the College of Health and Human Services at the University of Toledo, where she teaches in the ASAC-ABET accredited Master of Science in Occupational Health (MSOH) degree – Industrial Hygiene program. Dr. Milz is also a Co-Director of the Northwest Ohio Consortium for Public Health (NOCPH). NOCPH is a consortium of Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo and offers a CEPH-accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. Dr. Milz has been active for many years at both ACGIH® and AIHA. For ACGIH®, she has been on the Board of Directors for the past three years and is currently serving as the Chair. She has served as a member of the Joint Science Symposium Subcommittee of the Permanent Conference Committee for the past three years and she was a member of the Nominating Committee in 2007-2008. At AIHA, she has been an active member of the Exposure Assessment Strategies Committee, coordinating and teaching PDCs, writing and revising book chapters, and serving in the committee leadership positions. Dr. Milz will serve a three year term.

J. Torey Nalbone, PhD, CIH, FAIHA. Dr. Nalbone is Chair of the Departments of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Construction Management at the University of Texas at Tyler. His degrees are from Baylor University, University of Texas at Dallas, and Texas A&M University where he earned his PhD in Interdisciplinary Engineering (focus on Health Protection Engineering). Dr. Nalbone, a member of ACGIH® since 1985, has practiced industrial hygiene for over 35 years in a variety of settings including field/lab work, regulatory enforcement, regulatory oversight/management, teaching, and consulting. Dr. Nalbone has served on scientific committees of ACGIH® in both member and leadership roles and his volunteer experience includes Director positions on the Academy of Industrial Hygiene (AIH) as Secretary Treasurer; four years on the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH), two as Chair; and most recently, four years on the ACGIH® Board, two as Chair. Dr. Nalbone has served on boards in his community for the Children’s Museum and the local symphony. For the last five years, he has been most involved in the continuous improvement of industrial hygiene education through ABET. He is a member of the Executive Committee for the Applied and Natural Sciences Accreditation Commission (ABET – ANSAC).  Dr. Nalbone will serve a three year term.

Donald M. Weekes, CIH, CSP. Mr. Weekes is currently the President of InAIR Environmental Ltd. (InAIR) in Ottawa, ON, Canada. InAIR is an occupational and environmental consultancy founded in 1995 with a focus on indoor air quality issues in buildings. As a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Mr. Weekes has worked for various international corporations in the United States, Canada, and all over the world. Mr. Weekes is currently Vice Chair of the AIHA Content Portfolio Advisory Group (CPAG) (2017). Since joining AIHA in 1980, Mr. Weekes has served on numerous occasions including as Chair of two technical committees (Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), and Management), the Local Sections Council, and the Fellows Special Interest Group (SIG). Mr. Weekes was also Chair of two AIHA Local Sections (Metro New York (1980) and Connecticut River Valley (2001)). Mr. Weekes serves on the Disaster Project Team (2016-present) and he served on the AIHA Values Strategy Project Team (2009-13). He was a member of the AIHA Outreach Project Team (2014-15), a mentorship program that promotes the industrial hygiene profession. In 2015, Mr. Weekes helped establish the AIHA Distinguished Lecturer List (DLL) to identify high caliber speakers for local AIHA Sections. Mr. Weekes will serve a three year term.

The 2018 ACGIH® Nominating Committee includes three elected members who will serve a one-year term. They are:

Lauralynn Taylor McKernan, ScD, CIH. Dr. McKernan is the Associate Director for Science in the Division of Surveillance, Hazard Evaluations and Field Studies at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). She has served as the ACGIH® representative to the Professional Conference on Industrial Hygiene (now AIHA Fall Meeting) and the AIHce Science Symposium subcommittee. She is also a past recipient of the John J. Bloomfield Award.

Franklin E. Mirer, PhD, CIH. Dr. Mirer is a toxicologist and certified industrial hygienist and has been Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health at the CUNY School of Public Health since 2006. He retired as Director of the UAW Health and Safety Department after 31 years of service.  His primary scientific interest is exposure and risk assessment in the occupational environment, and regulatory policy. Dr. Mirer received the Donald E. Cummings Award from AIHA and the Herbert E. Stokinger Award from ACGIH®.

Enjoli DeGrasse Parson, MSPH, CIH. Mrs. Parson has been employed by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) for seven years. She works closely with the IBT Package and Airline Division leadership during collective bargaining sessions as the technical and regulatory advisor and on a day-to-day basis serves as one of the in-house subject matter experts on OSHA and DOT standards and regulations. Mrs. Parson is also a past recipient of the John J. Bloomfield Award.

These three elected members will be joined by the three Board Members whose terms expire in 2017 – Susan Arnold, PhD, CIH; Shery Milz, PhD, MOD, CIH, FAIHA; and George Gruetzmacher, PhD, PE, CIH – to make up the six member 2018 Nominating Committee.
