In this podcast, ISHN Editor-at-Large Dave Johnson interviews Nicole Greeson, MS, CIH, 2024-2025 president of AIHA – the American Industrial Hygiene Association. Nicole is the occupational hygiene and safety division director at Duke University Health System.

Greeson and Johnson discuss the evolving interconnectedness between industrial hygiene, safety and environmental; the rise of the professional generalist; addressing misconceptions regarding industrial hygiene; rebranding AIHA as the association for scientists and professionals committed to ensuring occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS); and finally the current and future impact of artificial intelligence on the profession.

This interview was prompted by a recent surge in interest in an article Johnson wrote on industrial hygiene 25 years ago, speculating on the future of the profession. Greeson notes in the podcast that the term “industrial hygiene” is often seen as outdated and less relevant in non-industrial settings, leading to a shift towards more generalist OEHS roles.

But she also expresses optimism about the future of OEHS, emphasizing the ongoing need for professionals in the field. She believes that OEHS professionals will continue to adapt and evolve to meet the changing needs of workplaces and communities.
