More than a year after the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) challenged the UK's top 350 companies to publish information on health and safety in their annual reports, 40 percent are failing to do so.

A report published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) shows a correlation between the level of companies' public reporting on health and safety and the level of risk that has to be managed within a particular industry.

For example, 100 percent of oil and gas and chemicals companies and 80 percent of construction and buildings materials companies surveyed reported on health and safety. But in lower risk industries, such as the finance, information technology and retail sectors, between zero and 50 percent of companies reported on health and safety.
