$79,000 was the median salary paid to engineers in 2001, according to a survey by the National Society of Professional Engineers. The pay scale ranged from under $49,000 for the lowest ten percent to $141,970 for the highest ten percent.

$91,741 was the mean pay for the 6,837 respondents.

For environmental engineers, the mean salary was $79,675, with a median of $70,000.

For those holding a Professional Engineering (PE) license, the mean pay was $95,629, with a median of $80,312.
