The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Symposium titled “Rethink Safety: A New View of Human Error and Workplace Safety,” will take place in San Antonio, TX, November 4-5, according to an ASSE press release. The symposium will provide attendees with an innovative view of safety and accident prevention through assessing the element of human error. Though human behavior has previously been explored, understanding human error as it relates to workplace safety is a new way of exploring where errors occur, how to implement new interventions and prevention by design.

The symposium will consist of 14 concurrent and roundtable sessions designed to provide organizations with new tools to improve safety. Attendees will earn 1.4 continuing education units (CEUs) as electives for ASSE’s certificate programs and for certification maintenance. After attending the symposium, attendees should be able to discuss reasons for human error, identify circumstances that produce an environment at risk for losses, recognize causal relationships between systems and accidents and implement practical approaches and tools to reduce errors.

Keynote speaker Dr. Todd Conklin, a renowned authority on organizational behavior, will provide attendees with a look at human performance and why changing perceptions of human error is key to changing safety. In addition, general session presenter Corrie Pitzer, a specialist in strategic safety management, will discuss recent disasters, the human element and how improved safety is very possible. Dr. Marilyn Sue Bogner, founder of the Institute on Human Error will present findings on errors in healthcare that are relevant across disciplines and discuss applicable solutions.

Other concurrent session topics include low-cost problem solving methodology, human error myths, fighting complacency, root cause identification, using the human factors analysis classification system (HFACS) for improved incident analysis and prevention of error through ergonomic design.

The symposium, featuring experts in the safety, health and environmental field presenting information about understanding human error for the prevention of workplace injuries and illnesses, will be held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in San Antonio, TX, November 4-5. Registration includes 1.4 CEUs, lunches and refreshments. ASSE will also separately offer a Math Review Seminar, ASP and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preparation workshops, and a Corporate Safety Management session prior to the symposium.
