Five companies fined in Fla. bridge collapse

Six months after the fatal collapse of a pedestrian bridge in Miami, Florida, OSHA has announced citations against multiple contractors. The catastrophic failure of the bridge on March 15 occurred before the structure was even officially open, just days after crews dropped a 950-ton span in place. One bridge worker and five motorists were killed. Eight other people – five of them employees - were injured.

The monitors detect not only standard gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and oxygen (Pac 6000 and 6500), but also special gases such as ozone, phosgene and nitrogen dioxide (Pac 8000).

Employees of a woodworking company in Greenville, Alabama performed their work without protective eyewear and respirators. Those were among the violations that got Harrison Industries LLC - operating as Structural Wood Systems Inc. – multiple OSHA citations. The company faces $85,362 in proposed penalties.
