Many pedestrians hit by cars are distracted by mobile devices

Pediatricians are being urged to advise parents and patients about pedestrian safety by the authors of a new study showing that child pedestrians are often hit by cars because they are distracted by mobile devices, such as MP3 players and cell phones.
A leading cause of home fires each year, electrical failures or malfunctions were factors in an estimated 46,500 home fires in 2010 according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). These fires resulted in 420 deaths, 1,520 injuries, and $1.5 billion in property damage.
The recent staging of OS+H Asia, 8th Occupational Safety & Health Exhibition for Asia, in Singapore concluded with a strong increase in exhibitor and visitor participation: 163 exhibiting companies from 22 countries showcased their products to 5,918 trade visitors - with 20% coming from overseas, primarily from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
I don’t know if you have seen the latest announcement from the UK Government - I noted it in an editorial that appeared in the Economist. I had a hard time actually tracking down the government statement. It was not made – or even referenced – by the HSE.

I say anything close to true global harmonization has a helluva long way to go. I’m not talking about war and peace. I’m referring to the incredible, horrible worker fatality stats that come from China each year, and barely warrant a mention in the U.S. press or U.S. safety press.
