Bullet-proof vests flunk the test, put lives at risk, cost manufacturer $4 million to settle U.S. lawsuite (2/17)

Lincoln Fabrics Ltd., a Canadian weaver of ballistic fabrics, and its American subsidiary, have agreed to pay the United States $4 million to settle the United States’ lawsuit against Lincoln for violations of the False Claims Act in connection with their role in the weaving of Zylon fabric used in the manufacture and sale of defective Zylon bullet-proof vests, the Justice Department announced.

Former dairy plant owner to pay $350,000 to settle alleged Clean Water Act violations (2/16)

The former owner of a butter and buttermilk production facility in West Point, Neb., has agreed to pay $350,000 in civil penalties to the federal government and the State of Nebraska to settle allegations that the company violated the Clean Water Act by illegally discharging pollutants into the City of West Point's waste water treatment system resulting in illegal discharges to the Elkhorn River, according to a press release from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Report: Space heaters involved in 79 percent of fatal home heating fires (2/16)

While only 32 percent of home heating fires involve space heaters, they are involved in 79 percent of home heating fire deaths, according to the new report Home Fires Involving Heating Equipment released February 11th by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Heating equipment continues to be the second leading cause of home fires behind cooking and the second leading cause of home fire deaths behind smoking.

OSHA orders Illinois-based railroads to compensate employee fired for reporting work-related injury (2/12)

OSHA has ordered the Illinois Central Railroad Co. and the Chicago, Central & Pacific Railroad, both headquartered in Homewood, Ill., to pay a former railroad employee more than $80,000 in back wages, compensatory damages and attorney's fees, according to a recent press release.
