In recognition of her commitment to professional excellence, and dedication to the safety profession, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently named member Aruna Vadgama, RN, MPA, CPHQ, COHN-S, BCSP, BCPE, CHRM, SRN of Carlsbad, CA, the 2012 Council on Practices and Standards (CoPS) Safety Professional of the Year (SPY).
Figures released by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) show a total of 61 on-duty firefighter deaths in the United States in 2011, the lowest annual total of firefighter deaths for the second consecutive year, as well as the lowest annual total in 35 years.
As temperatures rise, so does the chance of those working in areas susceptible to high heat conditions of becoming ill. To prevent heat-related work injuries and illnesses, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) suggests employers and employees take safety precautions now and be aware of factors that can lead to heat stress; the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke; ways to prevent heat stress; and, what can be done for heat-related illnesses.

The American Industrial Hygiene Association® (AIHA) has released a white paper titled “Perspective on the Role of OSHA in Advancing Occupational Safety and Health for the Nation,” which highlights the emerging roles and issues facing OSHA.
The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) and the HCMS Group have announced an important expansion to their “Blueprint for Health” — a free internet-based calculating tool that helps employers better comprehend and analyze the impact of medical costs, absence, and work impairment among their employees.
Citing the negative impact it could have on occupational safety and health, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) said it strongly opposes action by the Office of the Federal Register (OFR) that could harm the future development of timely and effective voluntary national consensus safety and health standards.
OSHA is requesting nominations for membership on the Whistleblower Protection Advisory Committee (WPAC).
