World Environment Day to focus on plastic pollution

Coming just a week after a whale died near Thailand and was found to have 17 pounds of plastic in its stomach, this year’s World Environment Day - today - has a timely theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution.” Begun by the United Nations (UN) in 1974 as way to raise awareness of the need to protect the environment, World Environment Day has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is observed in more than 100 countries.

Publication date set for new global safety standard

February 21, 2018
A highly anticipated global standard aimed at creating safer workplaces everywhere will be published on March 12, according to the Switzerland-based International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that spearheaded the five-year development process with support from the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). Companies can purchase a hard copy of ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems from ASSE beginning the week of the standard’s publication.

New global OSH standard is ready for roll-out

After five years in development, a new standard that provides a framework for improving employee safety, reducing workplace risks and creating better, safer working conditions, all over the world has been approved by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, which was developed with support from the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), is a voluntary consensus standard intended to help combat the global toll of work-related fatalities, which currently number about 7,600 a year.

Antibiotic resistance is now worldwide problem

A high level of antibiotic resistance reveals to a number of serious bacterial infections has been found in both high- and low-income countries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The organization’s new Global Antimicrobial Surveillance System (GLASS) reveals widespread occurrence of antibiotic resistance among 500 000 people with suspected bacterial infections across 22 countries.

Bangladesh workplace fatality rate remains high

January 17, 2018
Work-related accidents in 2017 in Bangladesh in 2017 claimed 1,242 lives and injured 371, according to a report by the country’s Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation (OSHE). Nearly 300 fatalities and 101 serious injuries occurred during the first three months of the year.
