ADM faces federal fine following fatality at Iowa grain silo

Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) Company and BWC Industrial Services are contesting over $63K in combined fines issued by OSHA following a feed storage facility fire and explosion at an grain silo in Iowa. OSHA’s inspection of the ADM facility in Clinton, Iowa followed a feed bin fire and an explosion in January that killed one responding firefighter and injured another.

California adopts emergency reg to protect outdoor workers from wildfire smoke

Last year was the most destructive fire season in California’s history. Over 7,600 wildfires burned nearly two million acres. As a result, on July 18, the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) Occupational Safety Health Standards Board adopted an emergency regulation to protect workers from hazards associated with wildfire smoke.

OSHA has cited U.S. Nonwovens Corp. – a home and personal care fabric product manufacturer – for repeat and serious safety violations after an employee suffered a fractured hand at the plant in Hauppauge, New York. The company faces $287,212 in penalties. Investigators determined the employee’s injury occurred when his hand became caught in a fabric-softener sheet-cutting machine.

The document provides requirements for finished dimensions, labeling and packaging for limited-use and disposable coveralls. It also provides guidance on selecting the appropriate garment size for the wearer.

Lumber mill fatality results in citations

August 2, 2019
OSHA has cited Pukall Lumber Company Inc. – a lumber mill in Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin – for exposing employees to multiple safety hazards following a worker fatality. The company faces penalties of $348,467. An employee suffered fatal injuries when caught in an outdoor bark conveyor belt in January 2019. OSHA cited Pukall Lumber for two willful violations for failing to implement energy control procedures, and ensure the conveyer had adequate guarding to prevent employees from coming in contact with the moving parts.
