Glass falls from skyscraper construction site, kills worker

One man was killed and another injured at a New York City construction site when a large piece of glass fell from one of Manhattan’s tallest skyscrapers. According to news reports, 67-year-old security guard Harry Ramnauth died and a 27-year-old sustained injuries that required hospitalization when the eight-foot-by-14-foot glass panel fell at around 10:30 on Saturday morning.

World Environment Day to focus on plastic pollution

A New Jersey energy company has wracked up 25 safety violations in the wake of an employee fatality that occurred at the company’s Springfield, New Hampshire plant in November 2017. The EWP Renewable Corp. employee suffered fatal injuries after he was pulled into a conveyer.

Lowe's to pull deadly paint strippers from shelves

Lowe's announced this week that sales of paint strippers containing methylene chloride and the solvent NMP will be phased out in its home improvement stores. The toxic chemicals have been blamed in a number of deaths and injuries to both consumers and workers. This story, which was posted on ISHN.com on June 13, 2017, describes how 21-year-old Kevin Hartley died after being overcome by chemical fumes while stripping a bathtub.

More women now getting lung cancer than men

Scientists puzzled: smoking rates not the reason
June 1, 2018
A collaborative study between the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute finds rates of lung cancer, historically higher among men than women, have flipped among whites and Hispanics born since the mid-1960s. The authors of the study, which appears in the New England Journal of Medicine, say future research is needed to identify reasons for the trend, as the change is not fully explained by smoking patterns.
