Before you blame the worker, or even the PPE itself for some workplace incident, consider that the worker may be sleep deprived. Often, when a worker is confronted for violating a policy, he or she will shrug and say, “I forgot.” Many safety professionals are realizing that human errors, behavioral drift and even recklessness can be traced to a growing threat to workplace safety –a lack of sleep.

I am very fortunate to be able to travel the world through my work. I just got back from Dubai and had a great trip!  It is so interesting to see other parts of the world and experience different cultures. In fact, I spoke to a group with participants from every corner of the world, and I do mean every corner.

For most of us, our work has a pretty sizeable impact on our lives. Our ability to do our job – and to do it well – is something which we all value, for a variety of reasons. As such, it is no surprise that we should also value the equipment which helps us do a good job day in and day out.

Repetitive tasks exist in most workplaces and wherever they’re present, so too is a frustrating safety risk. It seems like the more we perform a particular task, the better we should be at it. I guess that is true for the first few times we do a task, but then our human minds have a tendency to wander.

April 29th marks the one-year anniversary of OSHA’s Temporary Workers Initiative, which was launched to increase focus on the safety of temporary workers and ensure their protection from workplace hazards.
