After receiving more than 1.5 million public comments, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell this month released final standards that she said will support safe and responsible hydraulic fracturing on public and American Indian lands. The standards are aimed at improving safety and protecting groundwater by updating requirements for well-bore integrity, wastewater disposal and public disclosure of chemicals.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s recently released 2013 Annual Enforcement Results, EPA levied over $1.1 Billion in civil penalties for violations of environmental regulations last year. EPA also handed down over $4.5 in criminal fines and mandatory environmental projects in 2013, and sentenced violators to a combined 161 years in prison.
Deepwater Horizon cases and Walmart’s hazardous waste policies were among the cases pursued by the EPA last year. The agency’s annual enforcement report shows a focus on major violators that have the most impact on public health.
