First responders to get training in infectious disease safety

June 14, 2016
A training program will help approximately 35,000 first responders and workers whose jobs may expose them to infectious diseases protect themselves while also minimizing the spread of disease to others. The three-year, $9 million program is being launched by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of the National Institutes of Health, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other federal agencies.

Okla. fire department to get radiation detector

Muskogee (OK) firefighters are poised to obtain new technology from the Oklahoma Department of Homeland Security, which will aid them in detecting unseen hazards. City councilors unanimously approved a $24,500 grant for the fire department to purchase a handheld radiation detector through Homeland Security.

Chemical Safety Board wraps up investigation into 2013 West Fertilizer blast

Recommends changes in hazard awareness, land use planning and regulatory oversight

The US Chemical Safety Board (CSB) last week voted on its final report and safety recommendations on the April 17, 2013, West Fertilizer fire and explosion in West, Texas, which resulted in 15 fatalities, more than 260 injuries, and widespread community damage.

National Safety Council applauds reauthorization of WTC health program

The National Safety Council applauds lawmakers for reauthorizing the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, also known as the World Trade Center Health Program, and including it in the omnibus appropriations bill. Continuing to fund the program ensures that the men and women who responded to the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, D.C. and Shanksville, Penn., on Sept. 11, 2001, receive the care and medical coverage they deserve.

ASIS, NFPA to launch Active Shooter Initiative

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and ASIS International (ASIS), the preeminent fire protection and security associations, have launched a joint initiative to address active shooter incidents.
