The world’s largest online seller of goods tops the “Dirty Dozen” list of unsafe employers released by the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health’s (National COSH) today. The annual reveal is timed to coincide with Workers Memorial Week (April 22 – 29), which honors those who have been injured, suffered illnesses or lost their lives at work. How a fatal apartment building explosion could have been prevented

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has determined that the Aug. 10, 2016, natural gas fueled explosion and fire in a Maryland apartment building that killed seven people was caused by the failure of an indoor mercury service regulator with an unconnected vent line. The unconnected vent line and failed service regulator resulted in a leak of natural gas that accumulated in the apartment building’s meter room until it reached explosive levels and ignited.

Report: No increase in cyber risk for U.S. businesses

According to the Assessment of Business Cyber Risk (ABC) report released this week by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and FICO, the level of cyber risk to the U.S. business community is holding steady for the first quarter of 2019, with a national risk score of 687. The ABC measures the aggregate cybersecurity risk faced by the U.S. business community. Based on data from the FICO® Cyber Risk Score, the ABC is intended to advance cybersecurity awareness and improve the overall effectiveness of cyber defense programs.

Alberta, Canada welding explosion injures two, kills one

April 12, 2019
The family of a man injured in an explosion at a Nisku welding company said he is staying in positive spirits despite his serious, life-altering injuries. Eric Fabbro, 42, was one of two men taken to hospital after a blast at Ja-Co Welding and Consulting; Alberta Health Services said the other injured man was in stable condition. A third man in his 40s died at the scene.

Seven fire departments respond to house fire

April 12, 2019
One person was taken to the hospital after an explosion broke out at home in Westerlo, NY. Seven different fire departments were called to respond to an explosion at 8 Slade Road in Westerlo. Firefighters said the fire was a tough blaze to put out. "When we arrived we had numerous bottles of oxygen and assetline exploding in the structure itself," said Chief Don Filkins, assistant chief at Westerlo fire department.
