Safety science has come a long way in understanding behavior.

So many issues come to mind when I am asked which initiative demands the most attention in 2014.

I don’t believe individual leadership can change a national health and safety issue.

In June, it was revealed that Facebook had conducted a research study on more than 600,000 of its users to determine whether it could change their emotions by manipulating their news feeds.

Many EHS professionals complain about lack of power.

A claim from an organization that it is doing “everything possible” to “ensure” that its operations are “safe” is always false – empty-headed at best, intentionally dishonest at worst.

For most safety professionals, a safety culture is the perceived value each employee has toward safety.

Leadership is creating and sustaining positive change by working with and through others.

Something is wrong — possibly our conventional safety management principles and science are not only losing their impact, but are now contributing to failure. 

A risk-based approach aligns OSH with the business concept of risk.
