Achieving zero injuries in the electrical utility industry

September 15, 2015

Annually, 75 to 80 workers die from fatal injuries in the electric utility industry. A large number of these deaths are due to electrical contact. Many incidents leading to serious and fatal injuries could have been avoided by conducting pre-job briefings, using personal protective equipment cradle-to-cradle and ground-to-ground, using equipotential grounding, and wearing sleeves with high-voltage rubber gloves.

Neb. company tries to hide the hazards during amputation investigation

Company shut down production line, turned the lights off

A Norfolk, Nebraska flooring materials company tried to hide hazardous machines from federal inspectors, according to OSHA. The agency said MP Global Products LLC also threatened to fire employees who complained about unsafe working conditions during an investigation into why a 65-year-old temporary worker suffered the amputation of one finger and severe damage to another when his left hand was caught as he operated a machine.

Global tally: a million people suffer from work-related injuries, illnesses a year

September 9, 2015

A recent Swiss survey of the working population shows that in 2013 over one million people suffered damage to their health due to their occupational activity. Eleven per cent of those questioned reported suffering from a health problem linked to their work (750 000 people) and 6 percent had been the victim of a workplace accident (316 000 people).

In a three-month period this year, health care workers at Bergen Regional Medical Center LP in Paramus were victims of violent patients in eight incidents, including one in which a nurse suffered a laceration and bruises attempting to stop an attack on a patient.
