CSB says another Deepwater Horizon-like accident could occur unless industry makes changes

The blowout preventer (BOP) that was intended to shut off the flow of high-pressure oil and gas from the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico during the disaster on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig on April 20, 2010, failed to seal the well because drill pipe buckled for reasons the offshore drilling industry remains largely unaware of, according to a new two-volume draft investigation report released today by the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB).

EPA proposes updates to emissions standards for refineries

After receiving input from stakeholders including community groups, industry and the states, the EPA is proposing to update the toxic air pollution standards for petroleum refineries to protect neighborhoods located near refineries. The agency describes the change as a “common-sense” proposal that includes new monitoring requirements.

NY to fine railroad company for not disclosing crude oil train derailment

Canadian Pacific Railroad cars derailed Monday in Albany
May 16, 2014

New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald said the Department will issue the maximum fine allowed under state law to Canadian Pacific Railroad  for failing to report, as required, the derailment of four tank cars carrying crude oil early Monday morning in Albany.
