The National Safety Council has awarded $300,000 to the recipients of the 2026-2027 Research to Solutions (R2S) and MSD Solutions Pilot Grants to support projects focused on preventing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), the most common workplace injury.

To improve their safety, outcomes some organizations advocate "everyone is responsible for safety." The thinking behind this is that it will create a universal mindset in their workforce to actively engage everyone. The fundamental problem with this thinking is that it is not practical to hold a group accountable for individual behavior. 

The New View is fundamentally the application of systems thinking to workplace health and safety. It considers safety an emergent property of the system. So what does that jargon mean? Instead of focusing on an individual thing, the organization steps back and takes a broader view.

Identifying hazards in the workplace, determining the degree of risk they represent, and taking appropriate action is a fundamental component of any safety management system. While simple to say, it can be more difficult in practice than we might expect.

Maintaining a clean workplace increases productivity and safety. It also decreases the likelihood of adverse, work-related health issues.
