NSC Congress & Expo

Keynote speakers cover higher performance, future of safety

crystal ball
August 15, 2017

A variety of safety leaders and inspirational speakers are scheduled to make presentations at the National Safety Council Congress & Expo in Indianapolis.

On Monday, September 25, the Opening Session from 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. will be on: Racing to Zero - Safety that Works. It will feature Deborah A.P. Hersman, President & CEO of the National Safety Council (NSC) and Kyle Petty, NASCAR Driver, business executive and community leader.

An Executive Forum from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. will focus on: Serious Injury & Fatality Preventions - A View from the Top.  The speakers will be Laura Ambrose, Global Director EH&S Operations for the Dow Chemical Company; Donald K. Martin, Senior Vice President of DEKRA/BST; and Peter Waite, Senior Director, Global Health, Safety and Environment for Eli Lilly and Company. The Executive Forum is an opportunity to hear directly from senior operations and EHS leaders as they share their personal stories and strategic insights with the audience. A lively Q&A session will offer attendees the chance to pose meaningful questions straight to leaders at the top - and receive honest answers in return.

On Tuesday, September 26, the Occupational Keynote from 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. will be on The Future of Workplace Safety. The speakers will be Tim Page-Bottorff, Senior Safety Consultant of SafeStart and Larry Wilson, CEO and author, SafeStart.

Will the future be more regulations and OSHA compliance standards, and if so what will they be? Or will it be more focused on people: their critical decisions and unintentional errors? Will it be confined to the workplace like it is in Europe or will it be 24/7 and include the family? What about neuroscience? Will safety remain with risk management or move into human performance? And finally, will issues with management commitment still remain? With extensive experience from around the globe, the presenters will share their views on the future of safety and why they're so optimistic for the next 10 years.

The Motivational Keynote from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. will be on: Normal is Overrated - Aim Higher! Bonnie St. John, a Paralympic ski medalist, Rhodes Scholar, former white house official and best-selling author will guide audiences to find their individual paths to higher performance, greater productivity and overall success.

On Wednesday, September 27, the Leadership Keynote from 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. will be on: The Seven Most Dangerous Ideas in Safety, with Corrie Pitzer, CEO of SAFEmap International.

Never in our history have our workplaces been so safe and our workers well protected.

Yet in recent years, something strange started to happen. While many companies have "hit a wall" in safety performance, some have been slow but visible increase in serious accidents, and most alarmingly, a few "best in class" companies suffered catastrophic events. Something is wrong...

Corrie's presentation will demonstrate how the few seconds before a disaster were years in making - by well-intended, but dangerous ideas, beliefs and delusions. He will discuss the new roles of leaders and practitioners in a different world awaiting us.
