In order to achieve continuous improvement in safety, professionals must seek ways to build their cultures with a sense of community.

There is a renewed interest in management systems on metrics. This interest seems to be driven by two organizational concerns – transparency and risk.

I am up to much of nothing career wise. To be candid, I retired several years ago because I could not find a job.

Today’s good news is that U.S. companies added 243,000 in the past month dropping the unemployment rate to 8.3%.

That was the question a planning meeting facilitator asked about 15 of us earlier this week. The meeting topic was the future of worker safety.

I recently read an impassioned post from a long-ago coworker who wrote that she is “far happier on a day-to-day basis thanks to these technology tools (Twitter, e-mail, blogs, instant messaging, text messages, cell phones and Facebook).

"It is not my intention to do away with government," President Reagan once said. "It is rather, to make it work-work with us, not over us; to stand by our side, not ride on our back. Government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity, not stifle it."

Imagine if a month ago, on New Year’s Day, a grim-faced President Obama came on TV to address the nation with his official POTUS (President Of The United States) New Year’s Resolution:

What would you prefer: The carrot or the stick? Punishment works and is frequently used in less mature safety programs as a reaction to some incident that hurt someone. 

Last week we received this new release: “A UC Davis researcher has estimated the national annual price tag of occupational injuries and illnesses at $250 billion, much higher than generally assumed.
